OUR MISSION
What if every Black child born in Beaverton wanted to stay in Beaverton?
WE ARE BUILDING COMMUNITY BY:
Gathering our PEOPLE
Strengthening CULTURE
Healing our SOULS
What would it take for our children to not only love the place they live but feel loved everywhere they go? What would it mean to have our children be future elders speaking about the Beaverton that once was…
This question is what inspires us at Beaverton Black Parent Union every day. We have a vision of a community so connected and vibrant that our Black children want and can stay in the place where they grew up.
Our call to the community was like a heart song - bringing us as sisters and brothers, mothers and fathers, aunties, uncles, and grandparents…coming together as a newfound family wanting to protect the future and the today for our Black children, to fight for what is needed for our kids to feel safe and supported, to rise into their excellence.
Every year Beaverton attracts some of the best and brightest talent. They walk the greenspaces at Nike and the halls of the Intel campuses. They are doctors and engineers. They are business owners and artists. But will they stay? Beaverton has raised Black artists, authors, filmmakers, musicians, politicians, change-makers, and more who have shared the beauty of their talents around the world…What if they stayed? What would it take?
Every year we see families go. Until Beaverton Black Parent Union, every year I said goodbye to a family that found the isolation, disconnection, and exclusion too hard for them or their children to bear. What if they stayed? What would it take?
A PLACE TO FEEL AT HOME
When do we feel at home? When we have what we need, feel provided for, feel valued. For us home is more than a physical structure. It is PEOPLE. It is CULTURE. It is SOUL.
This is the vision for BBPU. Today we are more than just parents advocating for our children. Though we always were more.
